Breast Reconstruction Surgery after a Lumpectomy

Every year in the UK over 32,000 women are treated with a lumpectomy to remove a cancerous tumour. Having breast lumpectomy surgery is only the first step though as removing a lump can mean that the breast becomes smaller or mis-shapen as some of the volume has been removed. In some cases 10 20% of the breast is removed which can leave the breast looking distorted and very different in size and shape to the healthy breast. Depending on where the tumour was removed from, the nipple may also pull to one side and the result can be quite distressing for patients.
Many women opt to have breast reconstruction after a lumpectomy to help restore the natural shape of the breast. A benefit of having reconstructive surgery straight after having a lumpectomy is that the procedure can be completed as part of the same operation which can reduce hospital time and recovery time as all the surgery is carried out at once. The process is known as a therapeutic mammoplasty as the lump, plus a margin of healthy tissue is removed before the remaining tissue is redistributed to create a smooth breast shape.
Often the result of the lumpectomy and breast reduction is that the patients breast size will be reduced, resized and the breast will be uplifted as well. To make the breasts asymmetrical, a surgeon will reduce the size and also uplift the healthy breast too so that the breasts are in proportion. This procedure is often welcomed by many women as not only does the work result in healthy breasts but the breasts are also smaller and more pert too. Therapeutic mammoplasty is best for for women with medium to larger breasts as patients with smaller breasts may not have enough available tissue to make the procedure possible.
